A “who done it” mystery, where the mystery is not murder but about which ancestors had illegitimate kids. The ancestor research is being done by the main character who returns home to put her life into perspective before heading off to finish her archaeology dissertation. The family has a long sordid history which starts at the founding of the town. Alternating chapters are told from different ancestors, be it by letters or diary to a sort of first person inner dialog, giving the past characters more life then just the present day actions of the main character. The “monster” plays a back ground role to add ambiance and a thread that weaves through out the sordid past.

I enjoyed this book, but can understand that those people who read for action may find it slow or hard to get into.

Well the goal was to read 52 books in 52 weeks, one a week. I thought this would be easily done for me, I even joked that I would make my goal 104 books in 52 weeks. As the year started I was flying through books so fast that I could not fathom not surpassing the 52 in 52 by a large amount. As it turns out the end off the year was much more full then the start. I did reach the goal, I read 54 books in the year 2008.

2009 looks as if it will be a full year. So I am keeping my fingers crossed that once again I will meet 52 in 52.

A book that my husband got as a gift for Christmas. Yes I am slightly evil in the fact that I read his book before him, but I wanted to make sure that I finished it prior to the movie coming out. I find I enjoy being able to make my own images in my mind before I am handed them in a movie. Yes, I do end up holding it against a movie when they don’t put all the plot in the movie.

I enjoyed the book more then I thought I would, this is due to the book not being what I figured it would be. I thought it would be about boys with supernatural abilities who learn that there are consequences to using them. The book is about a boy who during traumatic moment with drunken abusive father uses an ability he is completely unaware that he has to get to a safe place. Story does not revolve around the ability but about the boy getting away from his father & making his way in New York with no money, no ID, no birth certificate, no S.S. and no high school diploma. While finding his way he ends up finding out more about himself as well as a cause to fight for.
